God do I love some home decorating.
There’s nothing like designing a space, giving it your personal touch, and truly making it your OWN. There are so many different styles to choose from and if you are anything like me, you have probably discovered that it is no easy feat decorating a new home while you are balling on a major budget.
It’s all about discovering those affordable finds and utilizing what you already have to get you by – and before you know it (little by little) your house becomes a home. Patience is key girlfriend, so in the meantime, here are a few of my favorite tips (along with some affordable finds) to get you started. Get those creative juices flowing!
Utilize Used Wine Bottles
Don’t you dare underestimate how useful an empty wine bottle can be. They can actually be great accents for shelves or window sills, especially if you spice them up with dried out flowers (or even fake ones from Walmart that will only cost you $.99).
The best part about it is you get to spend an evening perusing the wine aisle at your favorite grocery store and pick out a cool bottle that will suit the area you are trying to accessorize. Even better than that – you get to drink it 🙂 and that makes me one happy 24 year old. Just don’t forget to wash the bottle after you are finished, okay?
Cheap Greenery
Any type of plant, flower, or greenery is guaranteed to brighten your place up. Take advantage of how inexpensive greenery and floral accents can be.
You may also want to consider adding some twinkling lights in the mix to add a cozy vibe to the room. Walmart has the best floor vases (which is where I bought mine) and then I scored some light-up branches to add to my greens for extra pizazz. The lights create such a cozy mood at night, which is perfect for a movie in bed.
I got mine here and have been loving my twinkly night light ever since.
Fluffy Blankets In A Woven Basket
I know every 20-something woman has at least a few different blankets in her closet or on her bed. If you are anything like me, then you have an unhealthy obsession and will buy a new fuzz whenever you see one. No fuzz left behind.
When I moved into my first apartment I had a bunch of blankets already, but decided to utilize what I already had and turned them into home decor for my bedroom.
The only issue was that a lot of my blankets had some type of cute animal cartoon on them (they’re really cute for snuggle time, but not really cute when you’re trying to make your bedroom look like an adult sleeps there). Simply roll them up inside out so the fuzzy side shows on the outside. You’re welcome.
I scored my woven basket from World Market which was kind of pricey (I’ll admit), so check out Walmart, thrift stores, or check out these.
Stools (Especially Fuzzy Stools)
A small decorative stool can be an amazing addition to any corner in your space. They don’t have to be expensive either. Turn on your DIY mode and go looking for a cheap, simple crate that you can stain, flip upside down, and set some pretty books on top.
When it came to picking out a stool to pair with my floor mirror, I indulged and purchased a stool from Target, but also found the exact same one on Amazon. It’s super chic and the fluffy white exterior helps brighten up the room while also making a statement.
It’s a great piece of home decor that helps a fairly empty room feel finished. Plus, if you place it in front of a mirror it doubles and a statement piece AND a beauty stool for you to use while applying your makeup.
Books, Magazines, or Journals
Once again, utilize what you already have. This cannot be emphasized enough! I know damn well you probably have some old books lying in a box or in a drawer collecting dust. You might as well put them to use.
You can also grab really neat finds at your local thrift store or antique shops. Antiques might not be your thing, but you may be surprised at how many hidden gems they have waiting for you. It’s all about the details and a couple vintage accents may be the detail your space is missing!
Floor Length Mirrors
My gold, floor length mirror is by far MY FAVORITE PIECE OF ALL TIME. I love this mirror and I will be buried with this mirror. The best part? I got it for a steal.
When I initially made my big move to Hilton Head Island I had exactly $106 dollars to my name. I had just landed my first real career after graduating college and I was trying my best to get established in my apartment and finally design a space that was all MINE.
I was scouring Facebook Marketplace for furniture and came across a floor-length mirror I instantly fell in love with, but absolutely did not need. It was listed for $100 and would have dried my bank account dry, so what did I do? I bought it. Best decision I ever made. Plus, the woman cut me a deal, and threw in its sister mirror and the crystal punch bowl from her wedding day. Moral of the story? Don’t sleep on Facebook Marketplace. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Happy treasure hunting, friends. Piece of advice? Do it a lil’ tipsy!
Xoxo, Victoria
